HISTORY

Since 1771

The First direct reference to Methodism in Carnlough appears associated with the presence of a Methodist Mission School in 1831.  It was recorded that this was the only Protestant place of worship in the Parish where it stood.

The original Lease of the site of the present Carnlough Church was granted in October 4th 1857 by the Marchioness of Londonderry to the Reverent Thomas Ballard, a covenant stating that a Methodist Church was to be built at the cost of “at least £12”.    The Church was opened on Sunday 12th September 1858.

To mark the Centenary of the Church a much-needed extension was added to the rear of the building It was opened on 6th September 1958.  In 1983 the Church celebrated its 125th Anniversary when a new Pulpit was dedicated by the President, the late Rev Ernest Gallagher.  Since its construction the building has been lovingly maintained and through the years Methodism has borne its witness in the Carnlough area. The Carnlough Church continues to serve the spiritual needs of the small but very faithful Methodist Community and during the Summer months provides a Ministry to many who visit the District on holiday.
